Volunteer

The Literacy Council of the Black Hills relies on volunteers to fulfill our mission: to teach adults to speak, read, and write English.

We invite you join us on this rewarding journey.

You can transform a life in as little as one hour a week.

Tutoring sessions are at public places and at times that are convenient to both tutors and students. Tutoring materials are located at the Rapid City Public Library.

We request a $50 materials donation.

Volunteering as a literacy tutor may be for you if:

  • You are interested in helping new and inexperienced English-speakers gain confidence in their ability to communicate.

  • You are patient, persistent personable, and reliable.

  • You have the time to complete 12 hours of training over three days (no experience necessary).

  • You can meet at least once a week with your student.

  • You want to develop lasting bonds and form new friendships.

“What I find most rewarding is helping someone learn the language and then seeing how that transforms their life and their family’s life. It is a thrill to be part of that experience.”
